Douglas Cook is a Canadian filmmaker known for creating visually distinctive work rooted in cinematic storytelling, world-building and practical filmmaking. Working across fiction, non-fiction and commercial projects, his multidisciplinary approach combines strong visual concepts, physical sets, in-camera techniques and emerging filmmaking technologies.

His commercial work includes campaigns for Onewheel, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Original Joe’s, Servus Credit Union, SportChek and Honens. His work has received multiple awards, including Best Director, Best Production Designer, Best Promotional Production and Best Television Commercial.

His distinctive approach to visual storytelling has also led to a creative collaboration with RED Digital Cinema on Shot on DEAD, a project exploring the intersection of practical filmmaking and cinematic technology.

His latest short film, Before the Sun, has been selected for festivals including CIFF, EIFF, RIFFA, Spark Animation Festival and Mexico’s Mórbido Film Fest. The film received the Jury Award for Best Animated Short in Studio A(lberta) at EIFF, a nomination for Best Canadian Short Film at RIFFA and six nominations at the 2026 Rosie Awards.

Alongside his commercial work, Douglas continues to develop original narrative projects, including his first feature film, The Smolderkin, exploring new ways of bringing imaginative worlds and compelling stories to the screen.
